ASCUS Evening Sessions
Join us for our lab evening sessions, on the 1st and 3rd Thursday of each month to accommodate those who work full time, and to boost the art-science community aspect of the lab.

ASCUS Talk at Fusion
Come along to this Fusion event to hear our General and Lab Manager, Dr. Keira Tucker talk about how ASCUS brings art and science together through creative collaboration.

Microscopy 101: Exploring the Invisible
Explore the hidden world in our Microscopy class for Beginners. Whether you’re a Scientist, an Artist, or give want to give it a go!

Painting Microbial Masterpieces
Design your own textiles using bacteria, let it grow, and see your creation!
Join us at ASCUS Lab for a hands-on Bio-Art taster session, where science and creativity collide!

Tweed Estuary Clean
We are excited to join the Tweed River Culture for a clean up with a hint of science! We will be bringing some of our smartphone microscopes and other equipment for participants of the clean up to understand a little more about the health of the river.
Registration details on flyer below

Discover the Hidden Worlds of Plants in an Artist-Led Workshop
Join us for an artist talk and hands-on workshop where you will delve into the intricate microscopic structures of plants and uncover their remarkable ability to store heavy metals.

Talk|Post-Industrial Ecologies
Artist Dawn Felicia Knox will discuss her exhibition, Post-industrial Ecologies, grown from a decade of research moving through geology, industrial archaeology and ecology across one plot of land.

Microscopy Pop up
Fancy searching for the microscopic life that surrounds you everyday? Join us at the Edinburgh Science Festival EXPERIMENTAL LIFE and EARTH FEST to find some creepy crawlies!

Talk|Artist Talk: Mythic Instruments
Emma Hislop will give an illustrated presentation on her work that comprises the exhibiton Mythic Instruments.

Event |Morality Calculus Tasting Event
The experience will involve eating food fermented by fictional hybrid organisms analogous to the ones involved in the bread making experiments. Through ordering, tasting and thinking through food with fellow participants, the audience is invited to calculate the incalculable – the morality of genetic parts from different living beings, and to reflect on the choices they’ve made during the process.

We Pretended It wasn't green
James Stephen Wright will discuss his work We Pretended It Wasn't Green, a generative animation showcasing a frog and enchanting mushrooms intricately woven into a constantly changing narrative influenced by real-time earth data from satellites spinning above us.

Workshop|Microscopy Workshop with Dawn Felicia Knox
Investigate the intricate microscopic worlds found just below the ground in the rhizomes of ferns. Learn to use various microscopes and polychromatic stains to identify different cellular structures. Join artist Dawn Felicia Knox in her intercellular search to learn how plants navigate the pollution humans have left in the soil.

Exhibition |Mythic Instruments
Mythic Instruments explores the past and future of science and craft through mysticism and material. A return to and evolution of folklore, myth and ritual appears to have opened a portal for a greater type of knowledge.

Exhibition |A topography of micro planets
Photographic artist Imogen Hero uses her expertise in analogue photographic techniques combined with scientific processes to examine the interconnectedness of life in the Universe. The work in this exhibition was created by collaborating with microbial cultures on the surface of photographic film to create new ‘Micro Planets’ . The images reflect what life may look like on other planets, and across vastly different scales

Exhibition |Morality Calculus
Morality Calculus is a bioart installation by artist Yuning Chen that recounts the endeavour of creating bread fermented with yeast-human cell hybrids in a synthetic biology lab in collaboration with biologist Dr.Elise Cachat.

Exhibition |Post-Industrial Ecologies
Interlinking, multimedia installations by Dawn Felicia Knox exploring the way plants and fungi work together to undo the toxic residue of industrialisation.

Exhibition |Geometry, Art & Mind
Since ancient times, humans have been fascinated by shapes and structures, but looks can be deceiving! The Maths Outreach and College Engagement teams at the University of Edinburgh have joined forces so that you can explore the difference between how things really look, and how you might perceive them.

Exhibition|We Pretended It Wasn't Green
We Pretended It Wasn't Green is a generative animation by James Stephen Wright using satellite data. Showcasing a frog and enchanting mushrooms intricately woven into a constantly changing narrative influenced by earth data, the project highlights a disorienting contrast: a world where the vibrant green hues of nature are distorted and manipulated, representing our tendency to ignore the consequences of our actions.

Beginners Microscopy Course
Experience the intricacy, beauty and complexity of the world around us through microscopy at the ASCUS Lab. This jam-packed 4 hour microscope course is designed to enable participants to have a better understanding of microscopy techniques.

Unearthing Microlife
Unearthing Micro Life is an art-science creative learning programme which aims to enable participants to engage creatively with their local greenspaces through outdoor interaction and sample collection, supported by hands-on experimentation in ASCUS Lab by looking at these samples under a microscope, learning about microbiology, DNA and scientific techniques.

We are not separate from the soil
Join us to learn from, and about, the soil that sustains our ecosystems through art, poetry, chromatography and microscopy!

Microscopy on the Beach
Join us on the Portobello Promenade where we will be bringing some of our smartphone microscopes for the public to have a look at pre-prepared samples and we encourage you to collect your own samples on the beach to look at a little closer!

PANEL: Creative Science - a collaborative journey through Design and Chemistry
Join Dr Amanda Jarvis from the University of Edinburgh and the ASCUS team for a discussion round that meets with selected art-science duos to dive into cross-disciplinary Design and Chemistry collaborations. We will explore their creative outputs and gain insights on their collaborative journey to guide what has already been achieved and what conversations still need to be had to help us be the best designers we can be in all disciplines.
