Mycelium Magic

  • ASCUS Art & Science Edinburgh, Scotland, EH9 1PL United Kingdom (map)

Join us at ASCUS Lab for a hands-on Bio-Art taster session, where science and creativity collide!

In this 2 day session, you’ll make a coaster or home decoration with mycelium, the root structure of mushrooms. After your coaster has grown, you will have the opportunity to decorate it if you wish to do so in the second session.

No experience needed!

What to Expect:

This session will take place over 2 days, 1 week apart as mycelium takes time to grow. Day 1 (9th September) will involve mixing the mycelium with the growth substrate and pressing it into the mould for the coaster.

After a few days, the mycelium will knit the substrate together and you will return 1 week later (16th September) to remove your grown coaster from the mould, dehydrate it so it stops growing and decorate it if you wish. While we wait for the coasters to dehydrate, we will take a look at mycelium under the microscope!
