BIOLOGY, ART AND SCIENCE:

An Artiscience Library/SEICA Symposium on

C. H. WADDINGTON (“Wad”), D’ARCY WENTWORTH THOMPSON (“DWT”) et al.

In association with The Demarco European Art Foundation

and ASCUS Art & Science

TUESDAY, 30th MAY, 2017.  VENUE: SUMMERHALL, THE RED LECTURE ROOM

SCHEDULE:

6.30pm: DRINKS RECEPTION

7.00pm: Dr Charissa Terranova, Associate Professor, University of Texas at Dallas.

7.40pm: Open Discussion: including former work-colleagues of C. H. Waddington.

8.00pm: Break.

8.15pm: Feedback from the Break: Open Discussion: or further from Dr Terranova.

9.00pm: Close.  Attendees shall be welcome briefly to visit the ASCUS Lab and / or the Artiscience Library.

This symposium is occasioned by the return visit to Edinburgh of Dr Charissa Terranova, Associate Professor of Aesthetic Studies in the School of Arts and Humanities of the University of Texas at Dallas (UT Dallas).  Charissa’s strong publication record includes most recently The Routledge Companion to Biology and Art, co-edited with Meredith Tromble (2016).  She is currently working on a monograph connecting biology, embryology, and genetics to cybernetic art in the UK during the twentieth century, in which Wad played a major part; and on an anthology on DWT.

The meeting brings together some who worked with “Wad” and in related areas, with others who remain stimulated by his and DWT’s inexhaustible polymathic and artiscient legacy: providing an unique opportunity for those to whom these names are new, to learn about these towering figures.

Price: £10 (concessions £7).  Ticket available through the Summerhall Box Office: https://www.summerhall.co.uk/book-tickets/.  Summerhall: 0131 560 1580.

We expect to sell out; so please also contact me in advance if seeking a concession:

  Colin Sanderson, The Artiscience Library.  M: 0789 996 4250.  Email: artiscience@aol.com.

We regret the Lecture Theatre is accessed by a short flight of steps, so is inaccessible to wheelchairs
