Co-curated by the Science Festival, Summerhall and ASCUS Art & Science, Bio and Beyond brings together work from local and international artists, designers and scientists inspired by or challenging science and technology’s potential to improve our world and how we live in it. Bio and Beyond puts life under the microscope; encompassing everything from the deeply personal to the truly global – even cosmic.
As part of Beyond Bio we will be running a series of associated events and workshops, tickets are available through the Science Festival website. Bio and Beyond Exhibition programme
Ade Adesina’s work is a visual commentary focusing on ecology and our ever-changing world. He combines imagery from his African roots and from Western culture, using traditional printmaking techniques, to reflect the damage caused to our planet. Fusing wild and urban landscapes he creates dystopian terrains, exploring topics such as deforestation, energy consumption and the endangerment to both human life and wild species.

‘Atopic Art: Expressions of Eczema’ is a partnership project between ASCUS Art & Science, dermatologist Dr Sara Brown and charity Eczema Outreach Scotland. For this exhibition Trevor Gordon and Josie Vallely explore the personal stories and experiences of individuals ‘living with eczema’. Through their work the artists endeavour to address the personal impact of eczema, from building safe and dream filled spaces, to expressing imaginative representations that play with the tactile and textural manifestations of the condition.
In ‘Stranger Visions’ artist Heather Dewey-Hagborg creates portrait sculptures from analyses of genetic material collected in public places. Working with the traces strangers unwittingly leave behind, Dewey-Hagborg calls attention to the developing technology of forensic DNA phenotyping and the potential for a culture of biological surveillance. Heather Dewey-Hagborg hopes, by producing realistic sculptures of anonymous people using clues from their DNA, to spark a debate about the use or the potential misuse of DNA profiling, privacy, and genetic surveillance.

A young woman’s sudden discovery of her magical ability to travel into deep space sends her on a journey of trans-cosmological exploration, where she herself is discovered by a creature roaming the dark depths of our solar system. Special events are planned throughout the exhibition, expanding on the installation’s theme of utopia versus dystopia, alienation, and what the far future of mankind might have in store.
Featuring work by Heather Barnett, Anna Dumitriu, ecoLogicStudio, Patrick Hickey, Simon Park, Sarah Roberts, Urban Morphogenesis Lab and the ASCUS Lab.
As we go about our daily business we are surrounded by vast colonies of microorganisms, thriving communities existing largely out of sight. They may be small, yet in terms of impact and numbers, they represent the predominate form of life on earth. Menagerie of Microbes brings together the work of artists, designers and scientists who share a passion for these complex organisms, which exist in and around us.

CO2_Live is a new collaborative work that incorporates a Carbon Dioxide sensor, situated next to the street, connected to LED panels displaying the real time CO2 levels at the top floor of Summerhall’s TechCube. CO2_Live connects to multiple carbon dioxide monitoring stations around the world and is an interactive work allowing the viewers to select via Twitter (using @CO2_Live and #CO2_Live) which CO2 data is displayed.
