ASCUS Lab at the Festival of Creative Learning

The Festival of Creative Learning (FCL) is a year-long festival focusing on creative learning and innovation at The University of Edinburgh and is supported by The Institute for Academic Development (IAD). Having teamed up with the University for last year’s Innovative Learning Week, we are delighted to open up the doors of ASCUS Lab again for this year’s FCL week long programme of curated events and activities taking place this coming February (20th – 24th February 2017).

Discovering the Unseen World

Discover the fascinating world of microscopic life in the UK’s largest publicly accessible laboratory for experimentation in art and science, a place where artists, scientists and the ever curious come together.
 
For this workshop we will welcome staff and students from the arts and sciences (and across the University) into the unique ASCUS Lab facility at Summerhall to explore the microscopic world using our suite of microscopes. Participants will receive basic introductions on operating standard and specialist microscopes and will be guided through the hands-on workshop to discover nature on the microscopic scale. Participants will be able to explore a range of samples with the opportunity to capture their discoveries on digital media using our digital SLR cameras attached to the microscope.

Are you interested in the wonderful world of Slime Mould? Experience first hand this fascinating organism in the UK’s largest publicly accessible laboratory for experimentation in art and science, a place where artists, scientists and the ever curious come together.
 
For this workshop we will welcome staff and students from the arts and sciences (and across the University) into the unique ASCUS Lab facility at Summerhall to explore the wonderful world of slime mould. Participants will be introduced to the biology of this free living single celled organism, plus its applications and uses within the arts, sciences and design. Participants will also be encouraged to setup small-scale experiments and challenges for their slime moulds to navigate within petri dishes.
